Ed Garcia is a percussionist, composer, and educator. Ed was born and raised in Vallejo, CA. He began playing music in 2002, when he started playing drum set in the punk rock band Tapped Out.

He moved to Santa Cruz to study music at UC Santa Cruz (UCSC) in 2004. Here he met two influential teachers - percussionist William Winant and master drummer Undang Sumarna, who taught him the fundamentals of percussion and gamelan, respectively.

In 2007, Ed began studying at California Institute of the Arts (Cal Arts). His training in percussion and gamelan continued with several pivotal teachers - percussionists David Johnson and Randy Gloss, and gamelan musicians I Nyoman Wenten and Djoko Walujo.

From 2010-14, Ed established himself as a musician and educator in the San Francisco Bay Area. Ed performed drum set, percussion, and gamelan for groups like Wild Rumpus, Pusaka Sunda, Gamelan X, Sekar Jaya, Golden Path, Gadung Kasturi, and more. He also taught gamelan at UC Davis as well as private drum lessons throughout the Bay Area.

From 2014-15, Ed studied Sundanese gamelan at ISBI Bandung in Indonesia through a Darmasiswa scholarship.

In 2016, Ed founded the traditional Sundanese music/dance ensemble Mayang Sunda, served as the artistic director of Gamelan X, and regularly performed with the William Winant Percussion Group and Lightbulb Ensemble.

From 2019-20, Ed conducted music research in Bandung, Indonesia, through a U.S. Fulbright grant. He is currently composing music, publishing a journal article, and performing music throughout the San Francisco Bay and Santa Cruz areas.
